Way to Backup your Data Before installing windows 7

You have a computer with Windows XP installed. You want to install Windows 7. However if you directly install Windows 7, all the data you have collected over the years will get wiped out.

This is because when you install Windows 7, it will overwrite the disc and wipe off whatever data has been stored. The question then becomes: how do you prevent this? Here’s where Windows Easy Transfer steps in to help you out. Windows Easy Transfer is an utility available in only the Windows 7 operating system that helps people migrate data. So, to use this method, you will have to first insert the Windows 7 CD in the computer. You must not allow it to auto-run, as it may start installing Windows 7.

Open Windows Explorer. Go to My Computer and click explore after right-clicking on the DVD drive (that has the Windows 7 CD). You will find migsetup.exe (which is the Windows Easy Transfer application) in the migwiz directory. Open it by double clicking on it. The opening screen will tell you what Windows Easy Transfer will do for you. Read it carefully. Then click Next. You will be taken to a screen offering multiple methods of transferring data. Select ‘An external hard disk or USB flash drive’. In the next screen, select ‘this is my old computer’ option. Now, Windows Easy Transfer will scan your computer for files that can be transferred.

Once it finishes scanning, it will display the user profiles. Select the user profile you want to transfer. It is better to select the ‘customise’ option and choose the settings and files you want to transfer. The next screen will ask you for a password. If you are not going to upgrade the system immediately, you can give a password. You also have the option of leaving it blank. Once you click save, you will be asked to select the destination. You have to select the external hard disk or pen drive to which you want the data to be stored and click the ‘save’ button. Once the transfer is complete, remove the external hard drive. You can either restart the computer to get the auto-run option or right-click the DVD drive and select ‘setup.exe’ that will initiate the process of installing Windows 7. In the first screen, click on ‘Install Now’.

First, you will given an option to install the latest updates. Though this is optional, it is better to install them as they may include important security updates.   Once you accept the Windows licence terms, the next screen will display two options. Chose the second one that says ‘custom (advanced)’.

Partition:

You will have to select the partition for installing Windows 7. You will have to make sure that you select the partition where the old operating system (XP) was installed. Once you click Next and Ok, the installation process will begin. Once the process is completed, log in to Windows 7 and insert the external hard drive. You will now find the Windows Easy Transfer program under All Programs - Accessories - System Tools.

Click Next in the opening screen. You will have to select the external hard disk in the options given. Next, click on ‘this is my new computer’ option. In the next screen, click the ‘Yes’ option when it asks if ‘Windows Easy Transfer already saved your files from old computer to an external hard disk or USB flash drive’. Browse to the location in the external hard drive where you have stored your transferred files and double click. The next screen will display whatever you have transferred to the external hard disk. Select whatever you want in the new computer and click on ‘Transfer’.

After the transfer is complete, it is better you get rid of the windows.old directory. This will delete the old Windows files and release disk space by using the disk cleanup option. You have now got your old files and settings in the spanking new Windows 7.

Output Devices

Output is defined as any thing that comes out of computer.The output devices are capable of presenting information from a computer in man Language. There are many output devices attached with the computers. Monitors and Printers are two commonly used output devices.

* Monitor

* Printer

*Speaker

Monitor:

  Monitor is otherwise called as Display Screen. It provides a visual display of data or output.Monitors display images and text. The smallest dot that can be displayed is called a pixel. The resolution of the screen improves as the number pixels is increased. Most of the monitors have a 4 : 3 width to height ratio. This is called ' Aspect ratio '.

Printers:

Input Devices

Input devices are used to feed data into a computer. For example Keyboard, Mouse, Scanner are some of the examples of input devices. It is also defined as a device that provides communication between the user and the computer. Input devices are capable of converting data form man language to machine language (Computer Language). A computer can have several input devices.

* Keyboard

* Mouse

* Touch Screen

* Scanner

* Bar Code Reader

* Digital Camera

* Magnetic Ink Character Recognition (MICR)

* Light Pen

* Microphone

* Smart Cards

* Magnetic Reader

Keyboard:

The Keyboard a common Input devices. Keyboard consist of set of alphabetic, numerical and Symbols Keys.

Mouse:

Mouse is used control the movement of the cursor on the screen. If we like to open a application in our  computer by Left clicking the Application

Touch Screen:

It is a type of screen which have a touch sensitive panel. You can use your fingers to directly touch the objects on the screen. The touch screen senses the touch on the object and communicate the object selection to the computer.

Scanner:

Scanner is an input device that allows information such as an image of text to be input in to a computer. It can read images text printer on a paper and translate the information in to a form that the computer.

Bar Code Reader:

The bar code readers are used in many places like colleges, supermarket, bookshops, etc.  Bar code is a pattern printed in lines of different thickness. The bar-code reader scans the information on the codes and transmits to the computer for further processing.

Digital Camera:

Digital camera is an input device mainly used to capture images. The digital camera takes a still photograph, stores it and sends it as digital input to the computer. It is a modern and popular input device.

Magnetic Ink Character Recognition (MICR):

MICR is widely used by banks to process cheques. Human readable numbers are printed on documents such as cheque using a special magnetic ink. The cheque can be read using a space input unit, which can re recognize magnetic ink characters. ?It also saves time, ensures security and accuracy of data.

Light Pen:

A light pen is a pointing device shaped like a pen and is connected to a monitor. The top to the light pen contains a light sensitive element which, when placed against the screen, detects the light from the screen enabling the compute to identify the location of the pen on the screen.

Magnetic Reader:

Magnetic reader is an input device which reads a magnetic strip on a card. It is handy and data an be stored and retrieved also provides quick identification of the card'd owner.

Smart Cards:

This input device stores data in a microprocessor embedded in the card. This allows information, which can be updated, to be stored on the card. These data can be read and given ad input to the computer for further processing.

Microphone:

Microphone serves as a voice input device. It captures the voice data and input o the computer. Using the microphone along with speech recognition software can offer a completely new approach to input information in to your computer.

Classification of Computer Based on Principles of Operation

Based on the principles of operation computers are classified in to Three types, Analog computers, Digital computers ans Hybrid computers.

* Analog computers

* Digital computers

* Hybrid computers

Analog Computers:

  Analog Computer is a computing device that works on continuous range of values. The analog computers give approximate results since they deal with quantities that vary continuously. It generally deals with physical variables such as voltage pressure, temperature, speed etc.

Digital Computers:

  On the other hand a digital computer operates on digital data such as numbers. It uses binary number system in which there are only two 0 and 1. Each one is called a bit. The digital computer is designed using digital circuits in which there are two levels for a input or output signal. That two levels are known as logic 0 and logic 1. digital computers  can give the results with more accuracy and at a faster rate.

Hybrid Computers:

   Hybrid Computer have the combined features of both analog and digital computers. It is mostly used for automatic operations of complicated physical processes and machines. Now a days analog to digital and digital to analog converters are used for transforming the data into suitable form for either type of
computation.

Software And Type of Softwares

Software refers to a program that makes the computer to do something meaningful. It is the planned, step-by-step instructions required to turn data into information. Software can be classified in to two types

* System software

* Application software

System Software:

    System software consists of general program,s written for a computer. These programs provide dthe environment o run the application programs. System software comprises program,s, which interact with the hardware at a very basic level. System act as the interface between hardware and the user. Operating system, compilers and utility programs are examples of system software.

Application Software:

    Application Software consists of programs designed to solve a user problem. It is used to accomplish specific tasks rather than just managing a computer system. Application software are in turn, controlled bu system software which manages hardware devices.Railway Station, game programs etc are some of the examples of Application Software.

What is a Computer

A Computer is an electronic machine, capable of performing basic operations like addition, subtraction, multipli cation, division etc. The computer is also capable of storing information,which can be used later. A computer can
process millions of instructions in a few seconds and at the same time with high accuracy. Computers are very accurate and save time by performing the assigned task very fast.
